In the pictures he painted in 1880s, The Morning of the Execution of the Streltsy, Menshikov at Beriozov and The Boyarynia Morozova, the artist depicted Russian tragic moments in XVII-XVIII centuries. Streltsy was shown at the 9th Itinerant Exhibition in 1881. The artist was accepted as a member there.
