One of my friends at school in band can play the saxaphone for 5 minutes straight while circular breathing and he's only been playing for a year.

I've been playing flute for two years, just switched over to piccolo and hope to be able to switch to oboe soon, too. I just now heard of circular breathing about a week ago, but I find it easy to start by inhaling through your nose and pushing the air from your nose to your lungs and finally to your cheeks, and holding it there while breathing through your nose. Then, after getting used to that you should open your mouth just enough for a small trickle of air to come out, using the supply in your cheeks, while still breathing in through your nose, trying to fill your lungs as steadily as possible so they can fill your cheeks.

I've heard that circular breathing on the flute can be damaging to the embouchure and as a result the tone is messed up. There's a flute player, Sharon Beazley, touring with ACO later this year who can circular breath... it'll be interesting to hear what she makes of it!

You mention that this technique has been used for centuries. You aren't referring to Western music, are you?
